The Best Time of the Day for a Creative Writer to Work

How to increase creativity and productivity. It was a creative outburst — and an exceptional day in the poet’s workshop

Work in the morning

I like to work in the morning. After sleep, waking up, I have the privilege to be able to stay in bed, and often I do just that. I sleep, because I have been up late the night before, or I get an idea and it does not let go of me.

Today was such a morning. I had been up late the night before, reading and taking notes on a few writing ideas. I had given my brain and my subconscious some stuff to work on.

I woke up, took some time to reach the surface of the state of productivity, looked a bit at a few drafts. I noticed that the ideas began to flourish, and on my mobile I began to dictate my thoughts in my mother tongue, Norwegian, based on the concept of longing. Then I worked on the texts, translated them into English and tried to get an overview.

Then I went for an hour’s walk, had lunch, worked again, and in the afternoon and evening I submitted six stories to five different publications.

The creative process
